What happened to Apple Music for Business?

Apple Music for Business has been discontinued. Apple never made a public announcement: the service was quietly wound down after Mood Media acquired its partner, PlayNetwork, in 2021 — and Apple offers no business version of Apple Music today.

Apple launched Apple Music for Business in November 2019 together with PlayNetwork, a commercial music licensing provider. It gave retail, hospitality and other commercial venues licensed background music: curated Apple Music playlists combined with programming from PlayNetwork's music supervisors. Customers named at launch included Harrods, Levi's, PizzaExpress, Everyman Cinema and Apple's own retail stores.

In September 2021, Mood Media acquired PlayNetwork. Following that acquisition, Apple Music for Business was wound down without any official end-of-life notice. The signup page went offline, while some app store listings lingered for a while afterwards — which is why many businesses are still unsure whether the service exists.

Where does that leave you? Apple no longer offers a commercial music license of any kind. A standard Apple Music subscription is licensed for personal, non-commercial use only, so playing it in a shop, restaurant, gym or office breaches its terms of service. It also carries the same public-performance exposure as any personal streaming account used commercially — claims from rights organisations such as GEMA, SACEM or ASCAP, depending on your country. The same applies to every consumer music service: Spotify, Deezer, YouTube Music, YouTube, Tidal, SoundCloud and others. See our Spotify for Business alternative.

Who fills the gap today

Since Apple stepped back, the licensed business-music market that Apple Music for Business was part of is served by dedicated B2B providers — among them Soundtrack, Mood Media (which now owns PlayNetwork) and SoundMachine. What they share is exactly what a personal subscription lacks: a license to play music in commercial spaces.

Soundsuit is one of them — built specifically for retail stores, restaurants, hotels, gyms and offices, with the catalog depth Apple Music users are used to.
